Kathryn Nevin, LCSW
Hi, I’m Kathryn.
I am a trauma specialist and, first and foremost, a fellow human who understands how much courage it takes to begin healing. Having lived through profound childhood trauma myself, I know that survival requires strength and adaptation. Healing requires safety, choice, and dignity. It is an honor to sit beside people as they reclaim their stories on their own terms.
Since 2015, I have specialized in supporting individuals healing from early childhood and attachment trauma, as well as trauma experienced later in life. I also work with those who have experienced spiritual or religious trauma, including harm rooted in faith communities, rigid belief systems, or spiritual abuse. These wounds can impact identity, trust, and one’s sense of belonging. Together, we gently unpack what was harmful, honor what has meaning, and rebuild a sense of autonomy and internal safety without shame or pressure.
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Pennsylvania and Virginia with more than 20 years of experience across diverse clinical settings, and I hold advanced credentials as a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional.
In addition to trauma work, I support clients navigating anxiety, depression, mood and personality disorders, relationship patterns including codependency, and emotional dysregulation. I approach this work through a trauma-informed lens that recognizes behaviors as adaptations rather than flaws. My style is warm, direct, and collaborative. I bring deep compassion and thoughtful challenge while always respecting your pace, your wisdom, and your right to choose what healing looks like for you.
Clients often describe our work as grounding, empowering, and deeply human. My goal is to create a space where you feel seen, believed, and treated with dignity at every step.

My Approach
Trauma does not just live in the mind. It shapes the nervous system, relationships, and sense of self. It can show up as anxiety, panic, intrusive thoughts, feeling constantly on edge, sleep disruption, dissociation, or emotional overwhelm.
Our work starts with understanding the why behind what you are experiencing. I integrate trauma neuroscience with body-based and nervous system-focused strategies to help you feel safer, steadier, and more in control. We move at your pace. You decide what feels right to explore and when. You are always in charge of your healing. I am here as a guide.
What to Expect
After the initial intake, we begin with a clear, accessible understanding of how trauma impacts the brain and body. Many clients find that this knowledge alone brings immediate relief and hope. You will leave early sessions with insight into what is happening internally and practical tools you can start using
right away.
From there, we co-create a treatment path that aligns with your goals, boundaries, and nervous system capacity. This work is not about quick fixes. It is about reconnecting with yourself, rewriting old patterns, and learning how to support yourself when life gets hard.
If you are ready to begin, I am here.
Comprehensive, Holistic Trauma Therapy
At Empowered Counseling, I understand that trauma lives not only in the mind, but also in the body and nervous system. That’s why I offer an integrative approach to healing that honors your whole self—mind, body, and spirit.
Our work together draws from evidence-based, somatic, and experiential therapies, all carefully selected to help you gently uncover, process, and release what no longer serves you. Whether you're working through childhood trauma, relational wounds, chronic stress, or emotional overwhelm, each modality I use offers a unique doorway into healing. Usually, I employ an eclectic approach, drawing from several different modalities, including:
Somatic Therapy
Somatic therapy helps you reconnect with your body as a source of safety and healing.
Through gentle, body-based practices that support nervous system regulation, this work builds grounding and resilience from the inside out, without relying on talk therapy alone.
EMDR
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) helps the brain reprocess distressing experiences so they no longer feel overwhelming.
Using bilateral stimulation such as eye movements or tapping, this evidence-based approach supports the brain’s natural healing process, helping painful memories settle into the past and making space for lasting change.
EFT
Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) uses gentle tapping on acupressure points with focused language to reduce emotional intensity and restore balance.
Often called “psychological acupuncture,” it is an empowering tool for anxiety, trauma, and self-limiting beliefs, and can be used both in and outside of therapy.
Flash Technique
The Flash Technique gently reduces the intensity of traumatic memories using bilateral stimulation, often tapping, while your attention stays on something positive.
This approach allows processing without directly revisiting the trauma and has been shown to produce long-lasting results.
Brainspotting
Brainspotting is a brain-body therapy that uses specific eye positions to access and process unhealed trauma.
It is often experienced as gentle yet deep, supporting levels of healing that go beyond talk therapy alone.
Parts Work
Parts Work recognizes the different inner parts that shape your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.
Through a compassionate approach, we help you understand and integrate these parts, creating greater internal balance and allowing your grounded,
authentic Self to lead.
